"On behalf of Cuba, this small and generous country, we take it upon ourselves to welcome you from the five different jails where we are held with all the cruelty of the imperialist empire," reads the letter from the Cuban Five according to an article in Granma newspaper.

Singed by Gerardo Hernandez, Rene Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino and Fernando Gonzalez, the message urges participants at the forum to combine their thoughts and efforts to work for the "common good of humanity."

The letter notes that there are alternatives to dealing with the main challenges facing the world, suggesting a "globalization of solidarity."

However, the note adds that the greatest injustices cannot be stopped without taking risks. The letter also recalls how the US has used armed aggressions, clever propaganda and brutal terrorism against Cuba.

After their initial arrest nearly ten years ago, the Cuban Five were given harsh sentences in 2001, including three life sentences, for infiltrating terrorist organizations located in southern Florida. Their objective in the US was to inform Cuba of the violent acts being plotted against the island.
