Colombian Stage Director Doctor Honoris Causa in ceremony was attended by Cuban Culture minister

Colombian Stage Director Santiago García, director of the group La Candelaria, was granted an honorary Doctor of Arts title by the García said he was very happy to receive the award on behalf of all the members of his theatre group La Candelaria, with whom he has worked for over 40 years in the vanguard of Latin American theatre.

The ceremony was attended by Cuban Culture minister Abel Prieto Jiménez, president of the Casa de las Americas cultural institution Roberto Fernández Retamar and Graciella Pogolotti, adviser to the leadership of the National Association of Cuban Writers and Artists (UNEAC).

The Colombian actor, director and educator, one of the great masters of contemporary theatre, said that Cuba is very important for him and described the Casa de las Americas as a bridge that connects and unites the artistic movements of all of Latin America.

Referring to the 'Mayo Teatral event -- a season of Cuban and Latin American theatre called by the Casa de las Americas"he said it is a unique, ideal space for Latin American and Caribbean artists to meet, exchange their views and experiences, reflect and debate.

The Doctor of Arts title was granted to Santiago García in recognition for his vast work, creating a genuine Colombian theatre, his contributions to artistic creativity and his great versatility.

Authorities with the Cuban Arts Institute also took into account Garcías solidarity with the Cuban people, particularly at difficult times and his close, permanent ties to the Caribbean island, which he has visited on numerous occasions to present his plays, teach lessons and contribute to the Cuban theatre movement.
