Since the triumph of the Cuban revolution, the health strategy implemented in the island took into consideration the establishment of health facilities in mountainous areas like the Escambray, in central Cuba.

One of the polyclinics built in this region has been recently turned into a modern facility which offers 34 different services to over 33 500 patients from the municipality of Fomento, over 18 miles away from the capital city of Sancti Spiritus. Other services will be soon available which will allow the reorganization here of the Family Doctor program.
Despite the shortage of physicians reported in this region in 1959 -when the few doctors that lived here left for the United States- the government managed to improve the health services up to a remarkable degree.
Fomento was Sancti Spiritus’s first territory to conclude the Family Doctor program
