International Contest in Spain Cuban Choir awarded

The Chamber Choir of Matanzas, conducted by Dr. José Antonio Méndez Valencia, won the Public’s prize and the third place in Polyphony at the contest ended last Sunday at Torrevieja, Spain.

AIN informs that Méndez Valencia’s pupils representing Cuba in the 54th International Habanera and Polyphony Contest presented a select twenty-minute program, in compliance with the event’s requirements.

The site of the contest (www.habaneras.org), reports that the Cubans were preceded in polyphony by the Children Choir from San Juan, Puerto Rico, conducted by Carmen Acevedo, and the Cantemus Mixed Choir, from Hungary, the conductor of which ―Soma Szabó―, won also the award for best conduction.

The Cubans shared the stage of this event, ―one of the most important events of this genre in Spanish America―, with around twenty choral groups from America, Africa and Europe. The news agency adds that the first prize of the contest went to the choir of the Manila Eastern University, Philippines, followed by the group Oñakito Gambara, (Guipúzcoa) and by the University Choir of Mendoza, (Argentina).

The Cuban choral group will continue working on the mission Cultura Corazón Adentro, in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, taking las techniques of choral singing to boys and girl without distinction as part of the programs of the Bolivarian Alternative for Latin America (ALBA).
