Cuban experts from the Plant Biotechnology Institute (IBP) in Santa Clara province are once again dedicated to grow small-size varieties of banana, which are more resistant to hurricane winds.

Pedro Orellana, researcher from the institute, told the National Information Agency they are working to obtain in vitro plants of varieties with less than two meters high, which are less exposed to meteorological phenomena.

Orellana said the IBP has already supplied an enterprise in Ciego de Avila province with the vitro-plants necessary to cultivate 40 hectares of the "Cavendish Enano" variety.

Carlos Blanco, director of that entity, noted the first harvest will begin in July, and stressed this kind of banana allows for stable supply, as losses in case of hurricanes would be minimum.
