Cuban News Agency - September 2. HOLGUIN, Cuba, Sep 2 (acn) Storm surge resulting from Hurricane Earl near the Bahamas on Wednesday caused moderate flooding in coastal areas of Gibara city,in the northern part of the Cuban province of Holguin.

From mid-morning waves that were were 9 to 15 feet high hit the shore for several hours, entering the area of El Güirito near
Punta Barrels and flooded 15 houses, among other points of the coastline.

According to information released today by the Al Dia website, about noon the water level peaked and began to retreat.

This flood, witnesses said, slightly exceeded that of the Hurricane Hanna and at the time of this information some marine stretches of the road that links the Caletones beach to Gibara were underwater.

Provincial Meteorological Center specialists confirmed that the phenomenon was caused by the combination of waves generated by Hurricane Earl combined with the movement of high tide at 1:00 pm.

Today  September 3 there were calm seas in Gibara.
