The Foreign Minister of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who began last Wednesday his official visit to Cuba, held on Thursday a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Bruno Rodriguez. Both signed a Joint Declaration on Cooperation between the two governments and a memorandum of understanding, to establish a mechanism for collaboration and exchange of views and positions.
At the meeting held by the two foreign ministers, Steinmeier said he was grateful and happy to be on the island. "We are treading on new ground" he said, and stated that the signing of the agreement represents "a new base in the relationship of our two governments".
Both ministers agreed that the signing of the joint statement is an evidence of the willingness of both nations to strengthen and diversify their ties.
