The Memorial, located at the base of the monument, also has a viewpoint that is considered the highest place in Havana.
By closing its doors to the public as a museum at the beginning of the Revolution, the base of the monument for many years it was used for final farewell and mourning of personalities and other activities.

In 1995 the idea of opening the Memorial was resumed, and it was inaugurated on January 27, 1996.

The Memorial is star-shaped and consists of five rooms: the first two are dedicated to divulge the life and work of José Martí. The third shows images and documents related to the construction of the Square, the fourth room is the theater and the fifth space serves to temporary exhibitions.
