Cuba will present its achievements in the field of cardiovascular surgery at the 6th Latin American Congress of that specialty taking place in this capital from Wednesday to Saturday.
In statements to the acn news agency, the president of the organizing committee, Dr. Antolin Romero Suarez, said the event is being attended by more than 200 delegates. Among them are a hundred of Cuban experts from cardiovascular centers throughout the island.
The main topics of discussion at the congress will be training programs, professional ethics, microcirculation, emotional intelligence, artificial blood; and heart, lung and liver transplants.
Dr. Romero pointed out that all operating rooms for open-heart surgery in Cuba are outfitted with high-tech equipment; among these are extracorporeal circulation pumps which are responsible of carrying out heart functions while the surgeons operate on the immobile organ.
The Cuban expert recalled that the first operation of this kind was undertaken in the 1950s. He also highlighted the efficient work of the island's technicians, which has resulted from their constant and ongoing training.
The congress, sponsored by the Latin American Perfusion Council, includes an exhibition of the most modern extracorporeal circulation pumps; these are produced by a number of foreign companies.
