Cuban gets a seat at UNESCO's Oceano-geographic Council

Cuban scientist Guillermo García Montero has become a member of the Executive Council of UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceano-geographic Commission.
The announcement was made at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris, during the 14th meeting of this organization that looked into such issues as climate change and how it would influence the oceans.
At the forum, participants proposed several initiatives to create an early warning system to mitigate the devastating effects of tsunamis and hurricanes.
García Montero was chosen along with another 34 specialists from an equal number of countries. At present, he is the head of Cuba's National Aquarium and has had many years of experience in marine research.
