Cuban energy revolution makes progress

Cuban Minister of Basic Industry Yadira Garcia said on Wednesday that energy saving and its rational use are the current main objectives of the country"s energy revolution.
Speaking at the ninth session of the sixth National Assembly of the People"s Power (Cuban unicameral Congress), Garcia revealed that other purposes are increase in availability of power service and the use of renewable sources, including biomass, the sun and the wind to generate electricity.
Increased oil and gas exploration and production and rehabilitation of power networks are also among goals of the energy revolution launched in the Island in 2005, said Garcia.
She noted that increased power generation should not be translated into increased consumption, but rather into rational use of energy.
She added that a significant energy saving has been possible by replacing inefficient electrical appliances by low energy consumers used by the population.
