The Cuban delegation chalked up its best day Friday at the 15th Pan American Games with 11 gold medals spread across track and field (5), wrestling (2), canoeing (2), archery (1) and boxing (1), widening the gap between third place Brazil who sits 6 gold medals back with 40.
With closing ceremonies on the horizon, Saturday will be the most decisive day of competition with 56 gold medals up for grabs. Sunday will see the conclusion of three days of equestrian sports, the mens basketball final and the mens marathon, before giving way to the closing ceremonies.
As such, Cuba will need to finish Saturday with a four gold medal cushion to guarantee its position in second. So far, competition has mainly been between four nations, as 75 percent (271) of the gold medals disputed up to the end of Friday have gone to the United States, Cuba, Brazil and Canada (in that order).
