Cuban 5 Case in New York Times
The influential New York Times newspaper stressed Sunday the case of five Cuban anti-terrorist fighters unfairly imprisoned in United States, condemned to hardly sentences at a murky judiciary trial in Miami.

The daily reports on relevant aspects of the case, among them the hearing where the Five were sentenced, appeals, next August 20 hearing, and their prestige in the island, where they are renowned as Heroes of the Republic of Cuba.

Fernando Gonzalez, Antonio Guerrero, Gerardo Hernandez, Ramon Labanino and Rene Gonzalez are in US prisons since September 12, 1998, for only gathering information about terrorist plots by anti-Cuban organizations in Miami, Florida, in an effort to prevent the deaths of Cuban and even United States citizens.

Their sentences ran from15 years to double life terms, the latter to Gerardo Hernandez.

The New York Times also reflects hostility by US authorities, who have impeded through denying visas that spouses of Gerardo Hernandez and Rene Gonzalez, Adriana Perez and Olga Salanueva, respectively, visit them.

The article, written by journalist James C. McKinley Jr., refers to Hernandez' recent interview by the British TV channel BBC, in which he denounced all farce of the Miami hearing, among other irregularities of the judiciary process.

On August 20, there will be a hearing at the US Court of Appeals 11th Circuit in Atlanta, in which lawyers will present complementary accounts to demonstrate anomalies of the case.
