Tropical depression could become 1st hurricane to hit the Caribbean

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said today a tropical depression in the eastern Atlantic has the "potential" to become tropical storm and its projected path places it in the Caribbean within 5 days, as a category 2 hurricane.
"A low pressure area associated with a tropical wave is located over the far eastern Atlantic Ocean about 300 miles southwest of the southernmost Cape Verde Islan d. the system has the potential to become a tropical depression later today or on Tuesday," the NHC said in its website prior to upgrading it to a tropical depression..
It said the system has the probabilities of sustained (1-minute average) surface wind speeds equal to or exceeding 39 mph (tropical storm force).
