The release of Osvaldo Mitat from a Miami prison, this Friday, proves that terrorism against Cuba is not a thing of the past. He has only served 22 months of a three-year sentence for illegal possession of weapons, destined for use in attacks on Cuba.
Both Osvaldo Mitat and Santiago Álvarez Fernandez-Magriñá, were convicted in the United States for illegal possession of arms and explosives. But they made a deal with the prosecution, and now they have been relabeled 'freedom fighters'.
Both were aboard the yacht Santrina when they smuggled another terrorist, Luis Posada Carriles, from Mexico to the United States in 2005.
A Florida television station celebrated the news Thursday. Mitat told reporters his friend Santiago would also be released soon.
