Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) Secretary General Yolanda Ferrer Gomez spoke about Vilmas legacy home and abroad while speaking on the TV and radio The Round Table program dedicated to the FMC and Espin.
From now until International Womens Day (March 8, 2008), the FMC will be encouraging people to write in to local and national FMC offices to contribute to what should be the first step towards creating a Cuban Womens History Museum.
The homage to Vilma on Thursday centered on the simultaneous opening of exhibits in both Havana and Santiago de Cuba, displaying more than 200 photos and texts illustrating the career of this invaluable combatant.
Armando Hart Davalos, friend and comrade of Espin, presented the exhibition at the International Press Center in Havana. "Its very beautiful and important for our women and men to bow with immense respect and pay tribute to the Federation of Cuban Women that Vilma embodied, represented and will always represent. We can do this by showing the struggles she fought in the different fronts of the Revolution."
The FMC anniversary ceremony was attended by Vilmas relatives; Communist Party Politburo members Jose Ramon Machado Ventura, Yadira Garcia and Concepcion Campa; as well as other leaders from the Young Communist League, the Revolutionary Armed Forces, the Ministry of Interior and others.
The opening of the Santiago de Cuba exhibition took place at the Plaza of the Revolution in the eastern Cuban city and was presided over by Misael Enamorado, first secretary of the Communist Party for the province.
