The research study is being undertaken by doctors Julio Cesar Sanchez and Ania Hernandez, both with the Center of Attention to Diabetic Patients, and engineer Alejo Martinez, from the Agro-ecology Department with the Small Farmers National Association, in the municipality of Colon, in the central Cuban province of Matanzas.
The project focuses on 20 patients with Diabetes Mellitus Type II, who have been consuming certain amounts of root vegetables, grown with organic nutrients and treated with biological compounds for their healthy development.
A few weeks after the research began, the patients reported noticeable health improvement, while tests registered a decrease of glycaemia levels below 50 percent, what resulted in a reduction by half of the patients' use of insulin and oral medications.
Due to its social impact, the project will be presented in the upcoming International Agro-ecology Encounter, slated for next September in Havana.
