President of the African Union on official visit to Cuba

The President of the African Union, Alpha Oumar Konaré, began an official visit to Cuba to strengthen political ties between his organization and the island.
His visit to the island, which is the first as leader of one of Africa's most important organizations, will contribute to broadening political and friendship and cooperation ties between the Cuban government and the African Union.
The African leader had previously participated as a guest to the 14th Summit of Non Aligned Nations held in Havana in September of 2006.
The African Union is the former Organization of African Unity. Since its creation in 2002, the institution has worked towards political and economic integration in the continent.
As part of its agenda, the African official will meet with Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Perez Roque and will be received by other government officials on the island and visit places of scientific and historic interests.
