Portuguese Film Festival opens in Cuba

" Five Days, Five Nights " is inspired by the autobiographical novel by Alvaro Cunhal, highlighting the placid rural environment of bygone Europe - which contrasts with the tensions provoked by the fleeing of the main character.
Portugal's ambassador to Cuba, Mario Godinho de Matos, thanked the Cuban Film Institute for the opportunity to screen a group of films by the most prestigious Portuguese directors, who consistently participate in film festivals of Berlin, Cannes, Venice, San Sebastian and Toronto.
The Portuguese diplomat noted that Manoel de Oliveira, who will turn 100 in 2008, is considered one of the most outstanding European moviemakers of the 20th century. De Oliveira also referred to the renovation of the Portuguese movie industry by the new generation.
The programmer of the Cuban Cinematheque, Antonio Mazon, said several Portuguese actors and actresses are well-known in Cuba, as he recalled the role of Maria de Medeiros as the absentminded girlfriend of Bruce Willis in "Pulp Fiction," by Quentin Tarantino, and the gangster in "Airbag," by Spain's Juanma Bajo Ulloa.
