Cuba is producing a line of high-quality cosmetic products from spirulina, as well as nutritional supplements such as Spirel Mix and Spirulina Spirel, the National News Agency (AIN) reported on Sunday
The products, created by Cuban experts to replace imports, have brought large revenues to the island's economy.
Spirulina is a green-blue microalga artificially grown in San Jose de las Lajas, in the eastern province of Havana.
It is a biological source of proteins, as it contains all essential and ten non-essential amino acids, vitamins and minerals.
One of the products, Spirulina Spirel, contributes to preventing malnutrition, supplies energy and improves health.
Spirel Mix is a natural drink that comes in strawberry, vanilla and chocolate flavors and is rich in proteins, iron, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc, potassium, vitamins A, E, B complex and beta-carotene.
The new cosmetic products are commercialized under the Shaman brand to treat skin discoloration, among other uses. They also include Celupharma, against cellulites, and Herbagel.
