Medical specialists in the eastern Cuban province of Holguín are promoting the use of videoendoscopic surgery.
According to experts, during the first nine months of 2007, 533 patients were operated on using that surgical procedure at the Vladimir Ilyich Lenin Hospital, where 42 other surgical techniques have been introduced over the past few years.
The experts noted that they have performed complex surgeries using that technique, including nine laparoscopic hysterectomies and three video laparoscopic esophagectomies.
The first surgery to remove a gall bladder was performed at the hospital ten years ago, thus inaugurating the minimal access services in the province.
Those techniques reduce the patients' period of hospitalization.
