Monument to Wifredo Lam erected by Fundación Caguayo

A monument dedicated to the most universal Cuban painter, Wifredo Lam, rises up in the Fundación Caguayo, in the Eastern province of Santiago de Cuba. This institution promotes the monumentary and applied arts all over the world.
Saily Rivas, Executive Secretary of Caguayo informed to the Cuban News Service (AIN) that process of plaster cast, at San Luis municipality worshops, is already done: Then, the brass melting of the different parts of the sculpture comes after this process comes.
The work will pay a tribute to that artist, considered one of the most original Latin American surrealists and creador of a new pictorial language which joins tjhe Afro Cuban cultura heritage with the latest European avant-gardè trends.
The idea was born during the centennial of Lam`s birth, and it was quite welcomed by Alberto Lescay, President of the Fundación Caguayo, who donated his author`s right for financing the project. .
Another 44 contemporary Cuban visual artists joined this effort by giving 51 of their works. The Taller de Gráfica (Graphic`s Workshop) and the Galería Los Oficios (Los Oficios Gallery), both from Havana City also collaborated with this new environmental artwork .
The monument, representing a seven meter height bird of brass will be erected in Havana city. This image is reiterated in Lam`s artistic creation.
The legacy by the Cuban painter formed in prestigious world schools is universal because manyo f his works cand be admired in the most important European and American museums. Among his works outstands La Jungla, (The Jungle), Malembo, Presente eterno, Arpas cardinales, Luz de arcilla, Rumor de tierra and La silla (Chair).
