The tenth edition of the Italian Culture Week that begins in Havana on November 26th will be dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi, organizers announced on Tuesday.
The event, which will run until December 1st, will commemorate the
bicentenary of Garibaldi, also known as the 'Hero of Two Worlds', who
fought for the freedom of Italy and the Americas, said Havana Historian Eusebio Leal during a press conference.
Leal added that knowing what Italy represents for humanity has a great value for Cuba.
The varied program of the event was designed by the Cuban Culture
Minister, the Office of the Havana Historian, the Italian Embassy and
other institutions and it includes activities in the fields of music,
literature, arts and cinema.
Meanwhile, the Italian ambassador to Cuba, Domenico Vecchioni, said
that the Cuban people will be the main beneficiary of this event. He
praised the cultural exchange and described it as intense, varied and
of a high quality due to the participation of prestigious international
artists.
He added that this initiative also aims at strengthening ties between
Havana and Rome.
The program of the event includes a conference by Professor Francesco Perfetti about the independence of Latin America and the myth of Garibaldi, while political scientist Sergio Romano will also give a lecture on the European Union.
There will also be a concert by Italian pianist Riccardo Caramella and
an exhibition of photos of Italian movie celebrities of the 1960s and
1970s taken by Chiara Samugheo, the first Italian female reporter.
