One of the founders of the New Latin American Film Festival, Nobel literature prizewinner (1982) Colombian Gabriel Garcia Marquez arrived in Havana Wednesday to take part in the 29th festival.
Garcia Marquez has a grand passion for cinema, for which he has written numerous screenplays, and he joins a star cast at this festival, including actors Javier Bardem, Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna.
The contest, running to December 14, was inaugurated last night with a recital by Argentinean singer-songwriter Fito Paez, who sang a dozen of his most well-known songs, one of them in duet with Cuban singer-songwriter Santiago Feliu.
In the gala opening, Jennifer Weiss, a producer of Brian de Palma"s "Redacted," read a message from him regretting the US refusal to grant him a visa to attend the screening of his film in Cuba.
