Panamanian sports commentators headlined the arrival of outstanding Cuban baseball player Omar "El Nino" Linares Izquierdo as a batting training coach for Santiago de Veraguas, and regarded him as a glory of Cuban baseball.
An article in Panama-America daily by-lined by Jorge Pineda noted that Omar Linares joins a select group of Cuban instructors who have come to Panama as part of the sports exchange between both countries.
The Panamanian newspaper inserted a large photo of the Cuban player at the side of US Major League baseball player Cal Ripken, and recalled that Linares was a member of the Cuban team that won an exhibition match against the MLB Baltimore Orioles.
"That was a great moment in my career, it was a very exciting match," said Linares.
Panama-America said Linares was considered the best amateur baseball player in the world, and received several offers to play as a professional, but he never accepted.
