"I ask to have enough forces to die drawing", with these words René de la Nuez made public his desire during the ceremony held at the Arts museum, where he received the 2007 Plastic Arts Award, after last November a jury, chaired by Pedro Pablo Oliva, took that decision among the six proposals presented by different Cuban cultural institutions.
About 50 years ago, Nuez entered through a wide door in humour, perhaps in the most difficult humour, the political one, with two characters El loquito and El barbudo, who took with grace and psychological good sense the popular imagination. For those reasons and for his entire artistic work, Nuez is today an honourably heir of the Cuban political humour and since 1980 is recognised among the best one hundred caricaturist of the world.
The ceremony to deliver the award to René de la Nuez was presided over by Abel Prieto, minister of Culture and the praise words were stated by the professor and specialist Adelaida de Juan, who emphasized that the caricature has received its just recognition and has occupied the place it deserves in the plastic arts. At the same time she made a characterization of El Loquito and remembered that Nuez made this character in a constant denouncement against the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista and to make fun of the strong censorship, using several communication resources.
Adelaida de Juan also emphasized in the development of the social and political caricature in Cuba and quoted some of its main exponents. After it, Nuez pronounced an emotional speech, told that he was not going to make a drawing, had brief thanking words and ended stating that. "Drawing is everything, is death, is life and is love. I ask to have enough forces to keep drawing and to have forces to die drawing".
This award was established in 1994 and among the people who have receive it are Raúl Martínez, Adigio Benítez, Rita Longa, Raúl Corrales, Manuel Mendive, Roberto Fabelo, Fremez and Pedro Pablo Oliva.
The awarding ceremony had as a significant and beautiful end with the song Playa Girón, performed by its own author, Silvio Rodriguez, a compatriot of Nuez, since both were born in San Antonio de los Baños.
Rubén del Valle Lantarón, nacional director of plastic arts, Tubal Páez, president of the UPEC (Union of Journalists of Cuba), Roberto Fernández Retamar, president of the Casa de las Americas, Haydée Montes general secretary of the National Trade Union of the Workers of Culture, as well as several artists who had previously won their award and caricaturists, journalists, friends and family attended the ceremony.
