Víctor Fowler Calzada won the 2008 Poetry Nicolás Guillén award for the publication of his book La obligación de expresar (The obligation to think), presented to the most distinguished competition of the genre in our country.
A jury made out by Pedro de Oraá, Luis Álvarez and Omar Pérez valued in Fowlers work the "sincerity in his writing and the indifference towards the affectedness, something very common in todays poetry".
The awarding ceremony of this competition, called by the Letras Cubanas Publishing House, the Nicolás Guillén Foundation and the Cuban Book Institute, will be held next February as part of the XVII Havana International Book Fair.
