Ballet Lizt Alfonso's Dance Cuba with their musical "Vida" for Toronto was elected by Globe and Mail daily one of the five best shows performed in Canada in 2007.
"Vida," a Cuban-Canadian co-production of an elaborate dance musical and premiered at the Royal Alexandre Theater, was chosen among other 34 performances, by a jury of experts that also praised choreographies "In. ter. pret," by Dallas Black Dance Theatres, and Glass Pieces, by Canada Ballet.
Vida is the story of one woman's life, told from her vantage point near the end of her life to her granddaughter Alma. It is a parallel to Lizt Alfonso's own life and alludes to Cuba's 20th-century history. It's "an ode to life," says Kelly Robinson, Canadian co-director. ("Vida" is Spanish for "life.")
In the show, a co-creation of Lizt Alfonso, her world manager, Torontonian Peter Sever, and co-director Robinson, participate celebrities like Omara Portuondo and Ele Valdes, vocalist of the Afro-Cuban Music group Sintesis.
