Edelso Pérez Fleita, president of the Provincial Directive Board of the National Union of Jurists in Ciego de Ávila, deemed this verdict to be absurd and unjust.
Pérez Fleitas explained that the judges ratified the sentences of René González (15 years in prison) and Gerardo Hernández (two life sentences plus 15 years).
The decision on Gerardo’s sentence was 2-1, not unanimous. Judge Kravitch said in a 16-page statement that the government could not provide evidence enough to charge Gerardo with conspiracy in order to commit murder, Pérez Fleitas added.
He also said that the cases of Ramón Labañino (life imprisonment plus 18 years), Fernando González (19 years) and Antonio Guerrero (life imprisonment plus 10 years) were sent back to federal court Judge Joan Lenard in Florida for re-sentencing.
Pérez Fleitas also expressed that “the jurists of Ciego de Ávila will sign a call of the National Union to request the grant of visas to Adriana Pérez and Olga Salanueva so that they can visit their husbands Gerardo Hernández and René González, respectively”.
Thus Ciego de Ávila joins the movement that is taking place all over the country in favour of the Cuban antiterrorists and will last till July 21.
The signing of the call is also part of the activiries carried out by the jurists in Ciego de Ávila to welcome the juridical worker week held every year in June 1-8: on June 9th will take place the national ceremony on the Jurist’s Day at the theatre of the Máximo Gómez University.
