Jose Garcia Martin, agricultural engineer and official of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (CITMA) in Las Tunas, told Tiempo21 that in the strip of the basin belonging to the municipality of Majibacoa, special attention is offered to some 80 vegetable species of significant ecological value, included those of the forest Cenicero, unique Cuban mangrove swamp located so far from the sea.
The Cauto River starts in La Estrella, farm La Fortuna, municipality of Palma Soriano, Santiago de Cuba, to 600 meters on the level of the sea and travels 343 kilometers until the Gulf of Guacanayabo. This river offers magnificent conditions to irrigate and to fertilize a wide basin, rottenly assisted before the triumph of the Revolution, in 1959, and even not managed with the due efficiency.
