Surjeet was the leading promoter in India of the Cuba solidarity campaign, an effort that received the support of the majority of political parties and organizations.
During the hardest years of the "Special Period," which followed the collapse of the Socialist Camp in the early 1990s, more than a million Indian citizens contributed 10,015 tons of wheat for Cuba, a gesture Fidel Castro said was for Cubans 10,015 tons of inspiration and moral encouragement.
