"Our team is in very good spirits, with positive energy for performing well in these Games," Torriente said, after beating Prince Octopus Dzanie of Ghana 11-2. "I’m here to fight for the gold," the Havana native added. His next rival will be Enkhzoriq Zorigtbaatar of Mongolia.
An even more resounding victory was won by Yordenis Ugás, world champion in the 60-kilogram lightweight division for the last three years, who vanquished Hamza Kramou of Algeria 21-3. Ugás will fight again on Friday the 15th, against world champion runner-up Domenico Valentino of Italy.
Russia now has 10 men in the competition, just like Cuba.
