Leal, a long-time investigator of the history of Cuban independence leaders and of the island’s capital, was previously presented with a host of international awards and academic degrees.
Likewise, National Poetry Prize winner Fernandez Retamar, 77, has been decorated in Cuba, Latin America and Europe.
In related news, the 2008 Olaguibel Prize, named after Basque architect Justo Antonio de Olaguíbel and granted by the Basque-Navarre Official Association of Architects, was granted to Leal in recognition of his work on the Master Plan for the capital revitalization of the Old Havana municipality, in the Cuban capital.
The ceremony to bestow this distinction will be held in November at the Town Hall of Vitoria-Gasteiz, the capital of both the Basque Country autonomous region and Álava Province.
