The two teams are in Group A of the North, Central American and Caribbean Confederation (CONCACAF).

Canada will receive Honduras (Toronto, Group B), Costa Rica will play against Surinam (San José, Group C), Trinidad and Tobago against Guatemala (Port-au-Spain, Group A), Jamaica against Mexico (Kingston, Group B) and El Salvador against Haiti (San Salvador, Group C).

During the first eliminatory round, Cuba lost to Trinidad and Tobago three goals to one.

After that defeat, Cuba must score ten points at least in five games to move up to the CONCACAF finals, at which three teams will qualify for the World Cup in South Africa.

The United States is the favorite team to qualify in Group A.
