The Communist Party newspaper Granma says Chavez was greeted at the airport by Cuban President Raul Castro, and it showed a picture of the pair smiling and hugging during the Sunday night meeting.

Chavez also says he plans to meet with Cuba's ailing former leader Fidel Castro before heading on to Beijing, Moscow and another Russian city he didn't identify.

The weeklong trip wraps up with visits to Portugal and France, where Chavez is to meet with President Nicolas Sarkozy.
