Despite current shortages and difficulties, all Cuban cultural institutions at the national, provincial and municipal levels have drawn up their program of activities to mark the date.
The premiere of the film Kangamba by Rogelio Paris, which shows the significant role played by Cuban troops during the war for the sovereignty of Angola, is among the activities to mark the National Culture Day. The main gala will be held in the city of Bayamo.
Cuban artists are currently immersed in the recovery efforts in their respective territories and as members of the artistic brigades touring the areas hardest-hit by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. Activities also include art exhibits, book launchings and stage productions.
October 20th, 2008 marks the 140th anniversary of the first time the Cuban National Anthem was sung in the city of Bayamo-- declared a National Monument.
