The last publishing event in February 2008 ran in its traditional space at the San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress, the Pabellon Cuba (Cuba Pavilion) of La Rampa in the Cuban capital and the Rancho Boyeros Fair. The showcase also included the participation of four youth institutions and the 45 bookstores of the capital, which opened to the public since February 6.
The event also featured children’s pavilions at the habitual Tesoro de papel de La Cabaña and two weekend spaces, one located at the Pavellon Cuba and another at the Amphitheater of Old Havana, all of which had an artistic and literary programming and the commercialization of titles for children and youths.
The last Fair was visited by over 4 234 298 people, who bought about five million copies in the 42 venues throughout the island. In its Havana edition, the pavilions of the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress housed editors, writers, booksellers and distributors from 32 countries; 82 Cuban publishing houses exhibited and sold their books, along with 235 foreign publishers.
The artistic program of the event offered to the public included 63 musical presentations of diverse genres, 16 plays, 11 film screenings, 20 exhibitions and 14 dancing shows.
Likewise, artistic groups gave 32 concerts and a number of presentations were held in factories, schools, cultural and recreational institutions in the capital and the provinces.
The 17th International Book Fair Cuba 2008 ratified the reasons that have turned this event into the most agglutinating of the Cuban culture, more than a space to buy books and exchange with the writers, it has become a stage to show, in its diverse facets, the dynamism of the cultural life on the island.
Regarded as the major cultural event, the International Book Fair has become the most significant event of the Cuban publishing movement since its first edition in 1982.
It offers a space of participation and exchange to all entities linked to the world of publications, as well as to authors, distributors, booksellers, printers, literary agents, multimedia producers, journalists and other professionals, therefore, it will be a place to meet Cuban readers.
With the spirit of our slogan and the desire that our event becomes a referral of the exhibition, marketing and exchange of the best Cuban, Latin American and universal literature, we invite you to participate along with us in this party of literature and the arts.
