The award, granted by Spain"s Authors and Editors Foundation and the Ballet Nacional de Cuba, will be named after Cuban prima ballerina assoluta Alicia Alonso on the next edition of the contest, in recognition of her long career promoting ballet.

The jury presided by Alicia Alonso awarded Vergara"s piece for the rich choreography and creative use of space with a marked incorporation of set design elements in the piece.

The Ibero-American choreography award was first called in 1998 and has been granted to dancers from Mexico, Argentina, Spain and Cuba.
