The Havana City team has retained the crown won last year thanks to the victories obtained by three of their main men during the second semi-final program. The first was the now-flyweight Yampier Hernandez, who benefited from the absence of the former junior, Yunier Robles (Holguin).
In the cruiser weight division, the defender of the crown, Osmay Acosta, succeeded against Jorge Luis Garbey (Santiago), although the score of 5-2 did not reflect a great advantage. Then, in one of the most anticipated fights of the evening, the super heavyweight Robert Alfonso took revenge for the defeat suffered a few months ago against the local Luis Pons, and assured his place in the finals of the category.
This time, Robert took care of the distance from his rival and dedicated himself to effectively placing his punches to finally establish a difference of 8-1 in his favour.
There were no surprises in the remaining fights. So, the host Ivan Oñate pleased his fans with a 13-6 victory over his countryman Raidel Olivares in the feather-weight category.
Oñate will fight for the crown against Yasniel Toledo(Camaguey), who defeated Rogelio Marcelo from Cienfuegos11-5.
Meanwhile, in the light welterweight division the scene is ready for an interesting duel between Roniel Iglesias (Pinar del Rio) and Yordenis Ugás (Santiago de Cuba).
Roniel, Olympic bronze medallist in Beijing, won by 10-1 against Richard Poll (Santi Spiritus) and took revenge for the defeat suffered in the team competition. And Ugás former world champion at lightweight four years ago, defeated Duniel Suárez (Matanzas) 6-1.
In other results, the mini flyweight Marcos Forestal (Guantanamo) defeated Olandy Regalado(Pinar del Rio) 28-7 and middleweight Maikel Perez (Santi Spiritus) won 17-4 against Yudiel Naples (Camagüey). In the latter division, Santiago de Cuba’s Arisnoides Despaigne defeated José Luis Cruzata (Holguin)19-1.
As well, two boxers from Ciego de Avila assured a place in the finals. The cruiserweight Pedro Luis Rodriguez defeated Leinier Perot (Camaguey) by default, and the heavy-weight Orlando Rabí took the advantage of the disqualification of Noel Hernandez from Havana.
Havana City gets to the last day with an unassailable total of 41 points, ahead of Guantánamo (30) and Santiago de Cuba (28)
