Yanelis said that she tends to be introverted, a character trait, she admitted, is not very compatible to being a captain. “I feel strange as captain, since my temperament is nothing like that of others who have taken on this role, like Yumilka in the past few years.”
Nevertheless, she is fully committed to her new task, “In the future I am going to try to be more explosive and expressive...and try to lift up the spirits of my team-mates when necessary.”
Yanelis Santos started playing volleyball at age eight, making her international debut in the NOCECA tournament in the Cadet category.
“If Yusidey Silié becomes the regular setter, there will be a really good fit because we know each other really well. Moreover, the rapport I have with Nancy Carrillo and
Rosir Calderón —absent during the start of the National League due to her father being ill— is really strong since we all joined the national team at the same time in 2001.”
Yanelis said that it wasn’t until 2006 that she gained a regular spot on the team and called the recent overhaul of the squad positive and interesting: “After our gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics there was a complete makeover of what was called an old team and in Athens 2004 the team won a bronze. So, I ask that our fans believe in us and don’t lose the hope of seeing us once again on the Olympic podium.”
