As a result of that strategy, more than 2,000 elective surgeries on children and adolescents, in addition to emergency surgeries, were performed last year at the Paquito González Cueto Hospital.

The medical specialties that reported an increase in surgeries were otorhinolaryngology and maxillofacial, as well as reconstructive surgeries on seriously-burned patients.

In 2008, the hospital's doctors operated on 2,700 patients, 1,000 cases more than in 2007.

Maintenance and restoration works were carried out at the hospital's operating rooms, laboratories, emergency wards and outpatients services.
