Taveras said that Latin American and Caribbean countries must continue to unite forces to face the challenges of the international economic crisis.
The head of the Cuban Friendship Institute, Jorge Marti spoke about the hundreds of Dominicans who have graduated as professionals from Cuban universities.
Marti thank the Dominican government and people for their support in the struggle to bring an end the US economical, commercial and financial blockade against Cuba, and for freedom of the Cuban Five.
On February 27 1844, after long fights against colonialism, the Dominican Republic won its independence, led by Juan Pablo Duarte.
This year's celebration in Havana was attended by members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba, Dominican students and members of the Cuban Communist Party's Central Committee.
