With the participation of nine scuba divers and seven models from France, Italy, Spain and Cuba, the event is aimed at revitalizing the tourism sector in the region, seriously affected by the passing of major hurricanes, Gustav and Ike, in 2008.
For four days, participants in the contest will compete for the best digital image of the Caribbean marine environment, with its beautiful coral reefs, abundant sponges and animal species.
The event includes four categories: fishes, octopuses and squids; waterscape without a model (underwater wildlife); macro; and waterscape with a model. Only one picture per category can be presented to the jury.
Roberto Hernández, director of the local Marina, which includes the iconic Colony International Diving Center, told competitors about the nine spots selected for diving, including: Panel coral negro, Túnel del amor, Reino mágico, La corona de la reina and Rey del Sahara. “The diving spots were selected for their variety and beauty,” Hernández said.
Fernando García, vice president of the Cuban Federation of Underwater Activities, told JR that the FOTOSUB competitions will continue to take place in Isla de la Juventud, where it was held for the first time in 1983.
