This advance was possible thanks to extension of that speciality to the 10 municipalities of the Avilanian province, the training of the personnel, and the availability of a provincial center specialized in that type of biological research.

The effort has been translated into cell genetics studies, ultrasound, diagnosis of congenital illnesses, as well as alfaphetus and haemoglobin electrophoresis.  

The services contributed to reduce the deaths for inborn anomalies and to prevent cases of physical or mental disabilities during pregnancy, or other conditions originating in problems or defects transmitted from parents to children.  

As managers of the health sector have expressed, the exploratory program conducted by specialists to apply the discipline in the province was one of the most comprehensive ever accomplished.  

These studies open enormous possibilities for the province, because the hereditary factors contribute to the origin of digestive, cardiovascular and neurological difficulties, as well as bronchial asthma, arterial hypertension, diabetes, and old age dementia.

According to several studies, it is considered that in the world there are over 600 million people disabled because of genetic problems.
