Cuba received 531,071 foreign vacationers during the first two months of 2009, accounting for a 4.5-percent increase compared to the same period last year.
Sources from the tourist sector pointed out that 270,370 vacationers came from Canada, 16.3 percent more than during the first two months of 2008.
That increase compensated for the drop in the number of tourists from other sending markets such as Great Britain, France, Italy, Spain and Germany.
In addition, fewer tourists came from Latin America, especially from Argentina, Mexico, Chile and Venezuela.
Tourism is Cuba's second major hard-currency earner, and reports gross revenues of two billion dollars a year.
