ALBA Games Continue in Havana
It is day three of competition at the Bolivarian Alternative for the People of our Americas (ALBA) Games in Havana, with athletes competing on Friday in 13 sports.

Chess, handball, basketball, diving, hockey, fencing, soccer, judo, artistic gymnastics, tennis, softball, and water polo will see action today. On Thursday, Cuba won the ALBA Games´ first gold medal, which went to diver Jorge Luis Pupo.

Pupo won the men's 3m springboard final, with 435.55 points, ahead of his fellow citizens Jorge Betancourt (410.80) and Deinet Castellanos (337.75).

The synchronized diving 3m men and the women's 10m platform diving finals are set to be held on Friday at the Baragua swimming pool complex in eastern Havana.

Yesterday, Cuban freediver Valia Suarez won the static apnea competition after holding her breath under the water for for 4.40.57 minutes. Mexico´s Alejandra Lopez was runner-up, while Odaisy Salgad, also from Cuba, was third.

In the men´s competition, Erick Cintra, from the Cuban province of Villa Clara, clocked 4.41.23 minutes. Lemay Gutierrez (3.41.30) and Rolando Salgado (3.23.17), both from Cuba, won the silver and bronze, respectively.

Athletes from Cuba and Mexico, and a group representing the Cuban Manuel Fajardo Physical Culture Higher Institute, are also competing in static apnea, which is an exhibition sports in the ALBA Games.

The Cuban men's hockey team defeated Venezuela 6-0. The Cubans won easily on the Antonio Maceo synthetic field, with a great performance by attackers Roberto Lemus and Roger Aguilera, who scored two goals each.

Yuri Perez and Heriberto Sarduy also scored goals in the game against Venezuela.

Both teams are training for upcoming Simon Bolivar Cup, to be held in Venezuela in October.

Over 1,500 athletes from 25 countries are competing at the 3rd ALBA Games which intend to foster friendship, cooperation and integration.

Cuba hosted the 1st ALBA Games in 2005 in which 707 athletes participated from 15 countries, and Venezuela hosted the 2nd Games in 2007.
