In Sancti Spiritus, Cuban Cacao First Grown
Cacao seeds were first planted in the Mil Cuba farm in 1548, but the crops didn’t succeed. It was not until 1771 that cacao trees reached a productive boom after the arrival of French tenants in Cuban eastern regions.

According to historical records, cacao plantations are mostly found in Cuba in the eastern provinces -except Las Tunas.

Cuba has set a throughout-the country program for the development of that product taking into consideration its nutritional values as well as its commercialization possibilities.

Several researches have been conducted in the Sancti Spiritus’s mountanious region of Guamuhaya, where both climate and soil are excellent for growing cacao trees.
