59th Ernest Hemingway International Marlin Fishing Tournament begins in Havana
Some 120 participants from Russia, the United States, France, England, Canada and Puerto Rico

Jose Miguel Diaz Escrich, Commodore of the Hemingway International Nautical Club of Cuba, said that the event is an opportunity for fishers around the world to gather in the Caribbean nation to show their fishing abilities, but he added that the competition is also an example of human fraternity among people from different countries and with beliefs and political trends.

Some 120 participants from Russia, the United States, France, England, Canada and Puerto Rico, among others, begin on Tuesday the first of four days of competition at the Hemingway Marina in Havana.

The tournament will take place, as in previous years, using the tag and release technique in order to protect species such as the Blue and the White Marlins as well as the Sailfish and the Spearfish.

One of the winners of the tournament, in 1960, was the leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who accumulated the largest number of points along with revolutionary guerrilla Ernesto Guevara.

The Ernest Hemingway International Marlin Fishing Tournament, in honor of the famous American writer, was first held on May 26, 2950, and it is one of the oldest of its kind around the world.
