Cuban Cinema celebrates in Prague the 50 anniversary of ICAIC
A mainly young public filled the hall of the Cervantes Institute of the main Czech city to see the movie Barrio Cuba, made by Solas, which opened the season.

Before the opening ceremony, was screened the movie El Benny in the Prague cinema Svetozor, as part of a Latin American season here.

The season of Cuban cinema also included Miel para Ochun, by the same Solas, who in the last years of his life dedicated himself to establish the Festival of Poor Cinema in Gibara, Cuba.

However, the season had to include perhaps the two most emblematic works of Tomas Gutierrez Alea, for many people considered the great master o the Cuban seventh art. Memorias del subdesarrollo, and Fresa y Chocolate will make the Czech public to enjoy.

The season also included otehr titles such as El Brigadista, by Octavio Cortázar; El Hombre de Maisinicú, by Manuel Pérez and Madagascar by Fernando Pérez.

Pedro Moya, director of Cervantes Institute in Prague, thanked the initiative of the Cuban Embassy and expressed his satisfaction for having sponsored it.

By thanking the support of the Cervantes Institute, Barbara E. Montalvo, Cuban Charge d affairs, highlighted the importance of this 50 anniversary of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Arts and Industry (ICAIC, after its initials in Spanish), the first Cuban cultural institution created 83 days after the triumph of the revolution.

She praised the artistic values promoted by the ICAIC, as well as their contribution to the creation to the New Latin American Cinema and its institutions, among them the International Cinema and TV School, located in the Havana municipality of San Antonio de los Baños.
