Some of the students are from Mayagüez (hometown of Rafael Cancel Miranda), and Santurce (the birthplace of Daniel Santos, Danny Rivera and Cheo Feliciano).
The Puerto Rican undergraduates will stay in Cuba until August, and will attend lectures on Cuban history and customs, which are similar to Puerto Rico’s. It is not surprising that poetess Lola Rodríguez de Tió once said: “Cuba and Puerto Rico are the wings of a bird”.
The student’s arrival coincides with the closing of the Cubadisco Fair, which this time had the homeland of Rafael Hernández and Ismael Miranda as guest of honor.
These days, Cubans have enjoyed the performances of Puerto Rican stars like Danny Rivera, Cheo Feliciano, Julio Zenón, and Wilkins.
Puerto Rico has strong artistic roots. Rita Moreno was the first Latin who won an Oscar prize, and renowned Miriam Colón is also from that country. Benicio del Toro, born in Santurce, won an Oscar as best supporting actor in the film Traffic; while famous musicians such as Tito Puente, Los Barreto, Marc Anthony, Calle 13, and Julio Zenón were have been among the Grammy Prize winners.
